How does the video fit within my Minicourse?

This week I created a video for the mini-course of Small Group Instruction. The content of the mini-course has a clear real-world application so the videos will support through explanations and demonstrations how to correctly apply the new skills and strategies in an Elementary classroom with students.

The purpose of this video is to support the Module Learning Objective 4 (MLO4): Apply the Explicit strategies technique, sharing an example in the online discussion and adding at least 2 comments to peers’ responses. This MLO4 is aligned with the CLO5.

I decided to use an Explainer video type, where I can show the audience how to use a technique and the benefits for the students. A Demonstration video typo, would also be appropriate, and the facilitator could use the role-play with a second facilitator, having one the role of the teacher, and the second one the role of a student. However, due to the lack of resources, I opted for the first type.

What steps did I take te create the video?

  1. First, I wrote the script with the content that I wanted to share to the audience.
  2. Then, I designed the slides that will go in the video and support my explanation using Canva.
  3. I used Loom to record my voice and face, while the screen was recorded to present the slides generated in Canva. Loom was easy to use and I just needed a few tries before the final product. However, it was hard for me to eliminate the recorded buttons and I had to hide them on the right. I also need to learn more about switching between full screen and a circle with my camera in the same video.
  4. I created a channel on Youtube linked to my Professional Portfolio. Then, I uploaded the video created using Loom and added a Title, description, chapters, closed captions and a Creative Commons License.

Accesibility

  • Closed Captions: I used Loom to record my screen, voice and video. The subtitles were automatically generated, creating an SRT file that I uploaded to Youtibe.  In my Youtube channel, I only had to edit a few words and it was ready to be published! I decided not to have captions permanently embedded in the video to increase the interaction and personalization of the user.
  • I have some decorative pictures in the presentation and two pictures were explanatory. In my speech, I only mentioned the explanatory ones.
  • The slides have a high contrast of colors (black and white). I used two types of fonts and maintained the same size of the informative text.
  • The text is simple and easy to read.
